Just two weeks after National Grid were announced as a Living Wage employer in September, it extended its scope to include all young apprentices, interns and graduates at an apprenticeship awards event - attended by Chief Executive Steve Holliday (centre).
Because of its scale and size, National Grid believes it can positively influence its vast and complex supply chain to make sure that anyone who works on its behalf is appropriately rewarded. This means it will also mandate the Living Wage for all new supply contracts.
The company says its believes that everyone should be appropriately rewarded for the vital work done to safely and reliably connect people to the energy they use.
Sarah Vero, Director of the Living Wage Foundation says,
"We were thrilled this year when National Grid announced it's accreditation. Extending the Living Wage to apprentices and interns is exactly the kind of leadership that is needed by our best companies to encourage rich training opportunities and social mobility. The New Policy Institute recently reported a growth in youth poverty this year and it is up to 1.7m; it's even more important now that there are opportunities for young people to learn and earn enough to live"
