Living Wage Foundation Director, Katherine Chapman, today spoke at the launch event of a new report from the Resolution Foundation and the Social Mobility Commission, The Great Escape? The chances of escaping low pay in 21st Century Britain.
The research carried out by the Resolution Foundation published today explores trends in low pay over recent years and looks at the factors linked to low pay and progression. The analysis finds that:
- A quarter of Britain's low paid workers are permanently stuck in poorly paid jobs
- Half of Britain's low paid workers cycle in and out of low pay
- Hourly pay rose by just 40p in the last decade in real terms for workers stuch in low pay
Katherine Chapman spoke at the launch event today about how paying the real Living Wage is just the start of a good job and that if employers are going to invest in their staff, they need to think about how to boost productivity alongside wages, and to consider progression within the organisation in order to retain good staff and make their investment worthwhile.
Using Brewdog as a case study, Katherine illustrated how the company's decision to pay the Living Wage was made as part of a process about how the business could improve conditions for its staff, employee engagement and productivity.
